MISSION

SPECIAL MISSION

Three, two, one… Take off!

The Special Mission of Beef, a campaign promoted by Provacuno and Apaq-W and co-financed by the European Union, seeks to educate society on the contributions of the European beef sector to environmental sustainability and its efforts to reduce pollution and preserve and enhance the soil.

However, this mission would be meaningless if we did not also collaborate with the sector itself to ensure continuous improvement in sustainable farming practices, guaranteeing reductions in emissions, soil protection and restoration, and improvements in soil fertility, nutrient management and biodiversity.

And as in every mission, our producers, with the support of scientists, technicians and experts, have also set two major objectives in their roadmap to take care of the planet. Ready to meet them?

SB Objectives

SUSTAINABLE BEEF OBJECTIVES: REDUCING EMISSIONS AND PRESERVING & ENHANCING THE SOIL

As with any forward-looking mission, this one too has clear objectives. In its journey towards more environmentally friendly production, the beef sector has activated two main drivers: reducing emissions and protecting and regenerating soil. Here’s how they are taking this mission forward, step by step, from the ground… to the stars.

There are many initiatives that producers and livestock farmers throughout Europe are carrying out to reduce emissions, and each country is doing so by adapting their production systems.

In the case of Spain, Provacuno promotes Codes of Good Practice as tools to improve efficiency, livestock feeding and manure management, thereby reducing emissions of methane and nitrogen oxides.

For their part, producers in Belgium, through the Belbeef standard and tools such as DECiDE and PROVOB, can measure and plan the sustainability of farms, facilitating decision-making that reduces their environmental footprint. These initiatives reflect the move towards climate-responsible production in line with the European Green Deal.

Prevention of degradation, restoration, improvement of fertility and management of soil nutrients and soil biota are a concern of the European beef sector.

That is why, based on the science and experience of technicians and experts, different measures have been implemented to preserve and improve soils in a specific way.

Thus, in Spain, the Codes of Good Practice promoted by Provacuno encourage measures such as rotational grazing, vegetation covers or the efficient use of manure, which improve soil structure and nutrient management and prevent degradation.

In the case of Belgium, the Belbeef standard and tools such as DECiDE allow the adjustment of practices to preserve fertility, promoting rotations with legumes, the maintenance of permanent grassland and the use of organic amendments. These actions, reinforced by PROVOB’s sustainable scenarios, integrate soil biota management as the basis for living, resilient and productive soils.

INDUSTRY TOOLS

If the ships that go to space take off from Cape Canaveral, the ships that are bringing us closer to a more sustainable management of our environment, are distributed in all rural areas and fields of our geography. These are the beef cattle sheds and their coexistence with extensive livestock farming. And these are some of the tools with which the sector is working to improve its sustainability every day.
